"In the '60s and '70s I encountered a lot of people from California who looked slightly disgusted and ill about the prospect of being outside the state. He's stuck in New York, probably, and he really wants to get back. "That song has to be heard in any serious exposition of Californian musical culture. It's one of the most recognisable songs about California ever written and it reminds Iggy Pop of a certain kind of Californian transplant he used to meet back in the day. It sounds great in the desert and it sounds great on a freeway." The Mamas & The Papas – 'California Dreamin'' It's just a beautiful Chicano groove by some very, very fine Mexican and Mexican-American musicians. "When I was first there in 1970 to make a record, this was a hit on the radio, which was amazing because there's no chorus, there's no pop star, there's no adornment.
But they've pushed back since and there's a culture called Chicano in Southern California that is typified by this beautiful track called 'Viva Tirado'. I gotta say, we Americans kinda pushed them out and took over the land. "Some other people who were there first, however, were the people commonly known as Mexicans, though they were there before there was a Mexico. He welcomes the "push back" of the Chicano culture and praises its music. California is one of them." I had a song called 'The Passenger' in the '70s and I wanted to sum up what it meant near the end of the song and Woody's song popped into my mind and I threw in a few lines there, because there are some things that should belong to everybody. "The original okie that went to California and tried to sing for the common man was Woody Guthrie, he has a song that was a big influence on me called 'This Land Is Your Land'. This leads Iggy on to speak about the legendary Woody Guthrie, one of his favourite folk music figures and a huge inspiration to him as a songwriter. There was a very basic okie culture that popped up all along the beach strips of southern California." Woody Guthrie – 'This Land Is Your Land' "The Beach Boys basically are their grandchildren. A lot of them moved to California, which is a very rich piece of real estate, and tried to start again there. The dustbowl was basically a bank-financed land rush that went bad and stranded a lot of people with crops, no money and no equity. " where a lot of people from the Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska area all moved in a mass migration in the '20s and '30s and up into the '40s, originally to escape the poverty in the dustbowl.
